Due to the traffic restrictions after the violent protests broke out on Republic Day, the meeting of farmers with the Supreme Court Committee that was supposed to take place today was postponed to 29th January.
On January 21st the committee had held its first meeting with various farmer Unions from 8 states. For the meeting today, several farmer stakeholder associations were invited.
The committee had been appointed by a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by CJI AS Bobde, it has invited farmers representatives for negotiations on January 21. The first committee meeting was held at Pusa Campus in New Delhi on January 21st to decide the future course of action.
A four-member committee had been set up initially by the Supreme Court which comprised of Agricultural experts and activists. However, Bhupinder Singh Mann, former president of Bharatiya Kisan Union recused himself from the proceedings. The other three members Pramod Kumar Joshi Director of Agriculture Food Policy Research Institute, Asok Gulati former Chairman of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices, and Anil Ghanwant of the Shetkari Sanghatan Maharashtra cleared that they do not belong to any party or government body.
There were allegations made by the farmers on the committee that it comprises of members who were pro farm laws in the past.
The Committee said that those who are able to are free to come and meet physically but if that is not possible, they can join through video conference as well. There is an additional provision of a web portal being created by the government for all stakeholders who are not able to come to Delhi to give their suggestions and opinions.
Pramod Kumar Joshi, one of the Committee members has also specified that the objective of the committee is to ensure the benefit of farmers.
The Committee expressed in a press conference that getting the farmers to talk would be the greatest challenge. The members also assured that they will hold meetings with the APMC Mandi associations, millers agribusiness organizations, and others. They also said they would hold consultations with the representatives of the state and Central Governments.
