Suicides often bring an awkward silence in our discussions. Whether its farmers’ suicides or suicide of an actor. We often avoid the topic, yet we realize that we cannot bypass it, given the number of people opting for death over life. In this session, Ruhaan and Dr Gayatri Kotbagi will discuss the nuances of this delicate topic which demands more awareness and honest conversations.

Just as human life, human death too is a complex puzzle of the individual, the society and the state. In this session, we will understand the medical and psychological facts about suicides, we will see how the state and law in India have dealt with the issue of suicides and we will also exchange notes on the distance we need to cover to prevent suicides. Demystifying suicides is just the first step in preventing them. What is needed is a multi-sectoral approach.

Both the speakers firmly believe that each human life matters and society has a role to play as much as the individual in making each human life count.

Conversation on One of India’s Silent Killers – Suicides

Zoom meeting on 24th July 2020 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm IST

About the Speakers

Ruhaan has an abiding interest and over 13 years of experience in education, public policy and governance. At Centre for Civil Society, he is currently curating an aspirational project that aims to equip 1 million children from low-income families with foundational skills in English.

Mental Health and its impact on the overall quality of life is an area of academic and personal interest for Ruhaan. He conducts group workshops and occasional individual sessions, based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, two frontline therapy approaches for treating various mental health conditions.

Dr. Gayatri Kotbagi works as a post-doctoral researcher on various projects in health and social psychology domains. She recently moved back from France to India to work on a Research England funded project that focuses on mental health in Rural India. Gayatri completed her Ph.D. in Psychology from Université Paris Nanterre and continued working in psychology and mental health domains for over 10 years in Europe. Gayatri uses her academic training in clinical psychology and personal experience with mental health conditions to promote a blend of medical and social perspective to mental well-being.
