About the Program
eBaithaks are essentially free-flowing discussions which takes place on a virtual platform ( currently Zoom) and are interactive, interpersonal and liberal spaces of discussion and deliberation.
The conversation surrounding forest rights for tribal communities has been raging since the past few decades. In India, the enactment of the Forest Rights Act had a mixed reaction from various stakeholders involved in environmental conservation efforts as well as the rights of tribal communities to forest resources and property rights. In this eBaithak with Trupti and Ambrish Mehta, activists from ARCH-Vahini, we will discuss the lessons and challenges pertaining to the 12 years implementation of the Forest Rights Act.
Topic
Importance of Forest Rights in Tribal Empowerment
Venue
Zoom meeting on 2nd July 2020 from 5:30pm to 7:00pm IST
About the Speakers
Ambrish and Trupti Mehta are trustees and fulltime activists of ARCH-Vahini, a voluntary organization working in the tribal areas of Gujarat from 1981 in the fields of Health, Education and land and forest rights. They started their activist life in 1980 by working for proper rehabilitation policy for thousands of tribals, who were losing their lands and houses in the Sardar Sarovar dam project on river Narmada. Their sustained efforts resulted in a new rehabilitation policy by the Gujarat Government in 1987, providing a minimum 5 acres of land of choice for all project affected families. They are also working with village Gram Sabhas to build up their capacity for management of their community forests for sustainable use.
