About the Webinar
FastForward Justice is organising a Webinar on Anti-defection Law.
India’s parliamentary democracy is characterized by multi-party system and parties concentrated goal remains to capture power. But in maintaining and retaining power, people in power compromise on principles, give up commitments and there is foul play.
The phenomenon of Defections is in common parlance in India shaking up the Indian fabric of democracy, and regarded as mostly unprincipled, opportunistic measure. To check frequent defections, Rajiv Gandhi in his tenure as PM in 1985 by the 52nd Amendment, 10th schedule of the Constitution ringed in the Anti-Defection law aimed to check the ‘Aya Ram, Gaya Ram’ (frequent defection by legislators) in India.
Today, once again Anti-Defecton law is at centre of political drama during Lockdown India, with Sachin Pilot camp rebellion and defection and now disqualified. In this webinar, the contours of Defection in Indian politics, Anti-defection law and contemporary landscape of power and democracy in India will be dealt with.
