The Centre for Civil Society (CCS) is organising an eColloquium on The Limits of Democracy on Sunday, 2nd August 2020.
Democracy as a system of governance is believed to be the most egalitarian and representative of all classes of society. However, these notions are challenged time and about, especially with the passing of controversial bills, and policies. The system that posters itself as the messiah of people’s voices more often than not is limited by its own characteristics.
The romanticisation of democracy as an end in itself raises important questions regarding its presumed infallibility. Questions such as that involving fundamental individual freedoms cannot be decided by democratic vote.
The eColloquium will provide a platform to discuss this paradox of being governed and reflect on, among others, classical works of thinkers like James Buchanan and their reflection on contemporary political theory.
Date: 2nd August 2020 ( Sunday)
Time: 9:30 am to 6 pm IST (Lunch break and other breaks between sessions)
