Background
Conde is Guinea’s first and only democratically elected president. Conde, the country’s current president finished two terms in office and campaigned to change the constitution, in order to circumvent the two-term limit that the constitution prescribes. Earlier this year, protests erupted all over the country regarding the arbitrary attempts. Conde’s victory was declared with a margin of 78.88 percent for which the opposition called foul play over. The protests all over the country have killed more than 21 people according to official governmental reports.
Allegations
Cellou Diallo of Guinea won 33.5 votes and is the main opposition leader. The opposition alleged that there has been voter fraud done by Conde to confer the majority in Guinea. The contention of Diallo was that since the elections in Guinea is mostly fought on ethnic lines, a clear majority is not possible. Many observers of the election from African countries have backed the validity of the election.
Court’s Opinion
The Court was presented with opposition leader Diallo’s data. The data was collected by Diallo’s supporters at the polling stations. The court observed that the data was not enough to nullify the entire election process and schedule a new one.
Implications
The now President Conde paraded around in the capital area after the changes in the constitution going through and the court upheld the stance. This comes as a contrast to the protests which resulted in many deaths.
