The legal battle has been going on since 2017 when the Police of Finland, requested to outlaw the movement. The movement has been cited in several official reviews to be dangerous to national security. The Supreme Court has now confirmed the outlaw of the Nordic Resistance.
Background
The case has come up to the Supreme Court as an appeal from the two lower courts which have upheld the ban on the movement activities. The Supreme Court has expressed that the movement and the activities of its members have violated the fundamental rights under the constitution of Finland in addition to the international human rights standards.
The Nordic Revolution
In 2016, Jesse Torniainen was convicted for the death of a man who was beaten in connection to an anti-racist protest. This is where the movement came to light and has been under the lens ever since. The national security and the Police Board of Finland have repeatedly expressed their views against the movement activities. The Nordic Revolution took the defence of the right to speech and expression, in addition to the freedom of association. The PVL has always been associated with violent actions and constant hate speech against immigrants, Jews, and sexual minorities. The appeals court had stated in its judgment that the movement should be shut down for the benefit of the entire society.
Court’s Decision
The Court has banned the movement and their activities and held them to be significantly contrary to law and that they have exceeded the thresholds of freedom of expression and association.
