The court sentenced seven militants involved in the 2014 shooting to death and three others to 25-year jail terms. This decision comes in succession on several other bombings and shootings that have taken place in Saudi.
Background
Saudi Arabia has tried to curb the growing militant activity fuming in the heart of the land. The country had banned its citizens from committing jihad abroad or supporting militant groups. Saudi also supported the US-led military strikes against IS in Syria but recently Saudi has witnessed several shootings in the past few years putting thousands at risk. The shootings and bombing began as a result of the then-Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi who summed the Saudi supporters to mount attacks at the homeland. The minority Saudi Shi’ites have been made the victims of these organized crimes.
The 2014 Shootings
The shootings took place in Saudi when a group of militants opened fire on the Shi’ite Muslims who were celebrating Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram. The shooting killed eight people and injured several others. Many state security officers were also injured in the same.
Court’s Decision
The Court convicted ten militants for the shootings. Seven of them were given the death penalty and the other three were handed 25- year jail terms.
