On Friday, the Bombay High court extended the protection that was given to Republic TV’s Editor in Chief Arnab Goswami and other employees of ARG Outlier Media Private Limited till January 29th in the alleged case of Television Rating Point manipulation.

A status report was submitted by the police to the division bench of Justices S.S.Shinde and Manish Pitale by the Police on the ongoing case.

Advocate Harish Salve who is representing ARG said that all allegations that Mr Goswami used to give bribes to rig TRP numbers are all nonsense.

Mr Salve further told the court that a money laundering case was also registered against the accused by the Enforcement Directorate. Now, Mr Salve urged the court to call for a status report on the ongoing probe. He said this will prove that the case against the ARG by Mumbai Police is Malafide.

In response to this, the Additional Solicitor General and the counsel of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) said that the report is ready to be presented in the court. Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal was unhappy with this and questioned the Locus Standi of the ED in this case. He expressed strong objections to the ED appearing for this case as the ED is not even party to the case.

On this, Mr Harish Salve said:

“I don’t know how the state agency is trying to stop a Union agency from filing a report”.

On Friday while hearing the pleas by Mr. Goswami and ARG outliner the Republic TV counsel told the court that they are apprehensive of Arnab Goswami being arrested by the Mumbai Police and the Centre has still not filed its reply to the plea. Hence, they sought relief by restraining the Mumbai Police from making any arrests till the next hearing date.

Mr. Harish Salve said he wants to amend the petition and plead with the Enforcement Directorate as a party to it. The court then asked Mr. Salve to file his reply to the plea which has been amended and scheduled the hearing of the matter on January 29th. After Mr. Sibal said he had no objection the Court extended their protection for the employees and Mr. Arnab Goswami.
