Former DMK MLA Rajkumar Acquitted by Madras High Court

The Madras High Court has acquitted MLA Rajkumar in a rape and murder case of a 15-year-old minor girl. Justice N Satish Kumar pronounced the judgment of the acquittal.

Brief Facts of the Case 

The victim hailed from Kerala and was born in the family of labourers. She joined Rajkumar’s household in June 2012 as domestic help. Her parents were assured that they would send her to school when she started work.

After a few days of work, she called her parents and expressed that she did not want to continue with the work. On June 29th, 2012, her parents were informed that she was unwell and admitted to a private hospital.

Her body was later shifted to Government Medical College, where she died after two days. The body, upon inspection in Kerala, showed signs of sexual assault and rape. Subsequently, the police were informed to conduct the second round of postmortem.

Trial of the case 

Rajkumar and Jaishankar were accused of sexual assault, kidnapping under Section 359 and Murder under Section 300 of the Indian Penal Code. They were convicted by the special courts for MPs and MLAs and were sentenced to imprisonment of 10 years. They were also ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 12,000 respectively.

The other five suspects were acquitted.

Final verdict

The Madras HC has set aside the convictions and acquitted both the accused.
