On 22nd May 2020, The Delhi High Court asked the Center and the Delhi Police force to file a reply on Petition against Delhi Police officials. Petitioners filed this case because of the alleged actions taken by the Delhi Police. These actions were against the students of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) on 15th December 2019.
Application by the Petitioner
The Delhi High Court had earlier listed a petition against the Delhi Police over Jamia Violence, for hearing in July 2020.
The Petitioner, Advocate Nabila Hasan filed an application through Advocates Sneha Mukherjee and Siddharth Seem. The application said that Delhi Police harassed students of JMI University after calling them in for investigation.
It stated that the situation of JMI University is as serious as before. In other words, there have been many cases of the Delhi Police showing cruelty on students on February 20. The plea said that in this circumstance it has become necessary to prefer the present Case.
The Delhi High Court had earlier issued notice to the Center and Delhi Police to file a reply on the petition and sought their responses.
Besides, petitioners have moved the Court against Delhi Police officials on various occasions. The Petitioners are lawyers, students of JMI University, and the residents of Okhla where the University is located and the Imam of Jama Masjid.
Court’s Observation
A Division Bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan conducted the hearing through video conferencing. They asked the Center and Delhi Police to file their reply to the plea.
They listed the matter for further hearing on June 5, 2020.
