Calcutta High Court Suspects the Increase in Child Marriage as a Garb for Child Trafficking; Issues Order to Investigate the Matter

Due to the lockdown, reports of an increase in child marriage surfaced. The Calcutta High Court has suspected the following to be a garb for child trafficking. Secretary for Women and Child Development Department also filed a report on the matter. The investigations, therein, helped to rescue the children.

Court’s Order

The pandemic has caused considerable panic among citizens of the country. Amidst the pandemic, a series of reports relating to child marriages came to notice. The Court instructed the police to investigate the matter. The perpetrators are targeting backward families. They trick them to marrying off their child to overcome poverty. Subsequently, a child is trafficked.

The investigation helped in saving 40 children. The Calcutta High Court ordered to register complaints against the perpetrators. It also instructed to present the victims to the Magistrate within 48 hours. The order examined the positions of the Juvenile Justice Board. The Court found that the board is short-staffed and lacks resources. Moreover, infrastructural deficiencies are the primary reason for children’s suffering.

The Court, further, found that out of the 75 migrant workers’ children brought home, 43 have tested COVID-19 positive. The safety of these children stands compromised. The Court concluded that the investigation is not satisfactory. Hence, the Court requested a detailed report. The report is about the case and the progress of the investigation.
