It was found that the committee formed by the Supreme Court, consisted of members who had a pro-farm laws stance in the past. The committee was set up by the Supreme Court Tuesday evening after it heard a number of petitions challenging the farm laws. The Committee was set up to hear the farmer’s grievances relating to farm laws and was open to all opinions to make a decision.
The problem arose when it was found that all the members in the committee were pro- farm laws which enraged the farmers. The Punjab Farmer’s union argued that they will not comply with the orders of the committee as all the four members are pro-government and are just trying to justify laws.
The committee comprised of Bhupinder Singh Mann the president of Bharatiya Kisan Union and All India Kisan Coordination Committee; Ashok Gulati who is an agricultural economist and former chairman of the Commission for agricultural costs and Prices; Dr. Pramod Kumar Joshi, an agricultural economist and also the Director for South Asia, International Food and Policy Research; Anil Ghanwant is the chief of Shetkari Sanghatan.
Anil Ghanwant has expressed his inclination towards the farm laws through articles published in the media.
Mr. Gulati who was a member of the Prime Ministers’ advisory council from 1999 to 2001 has written in many dailies that he is in support of the farm laws. He is found to have also spoken to the media regarding the same.
This support from Mr. Gulati can be clearly seen from what he told the Times of India in December, stating that the three farm laws will benefit the farmers. He has also written opinion pieces for Indian Express titled “We need laws that give farmers more space to sell their produce- New farm laws fit this bill” and “Challenges to farm bills harken Socialist era, attempt to undo Agriculture”.
Mr. Ghanwant is the chief of the Shetkari Sanghatan that is in support of the new farm laws. He also observed that the Government should have consulted the farmers before bringing these laws, the lack of discussion with the farmers is what has led to these misunderstandings and protests.
Further, Mr. Mann was a part of a group of farmers who met the Minister of Agriculture, Narendra Singh Tomar to express his consent with the new farm laws.
The Fourth member, Mr. Joshi has also conveyed through many articles his support for the farm laws. One of the articles co-written by him read “Scrapping the three farm laws will be disastrous for the entire agricultural sector, more so for the farmers”.
The Court stated that this committee is formed to solve the grievances of the farmers and whether the farmers are for it or not they must participate in the discussion and cooperate. It underlines the fact that this is a matter of life and death and the Court is concerned about the property and life of people attached to this agitation and is trying to solve this matter in the best way possible.
