The Supreme Court refused to take up a plea on Monday which sought to set up a committee headed by the former apex court judge to conduct a time-bound probe into the violence that took place during the Tractor Rally on Republic Day.

Lawyer Vishal Tiwari who filed the plea was asked by the bench headed by S A Bobde to give a representation to the Central Government for necessary action.

The bench also comprising of Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian said that they are sure that the government is inquiring into the violence. They also stated that they have read a statement made by the Prime Minister that law will take its course which confirms that they are inquiring into it. The bench expressed that they would not want to interfere at this stage.

Tiwary in his petition had asked to set up a committee headed by a retired apex court judge to inquire into the incident that took place on Republic day.

Apart from this the apex court also refused to entertain other pleas with respect to the tractor rally violence and the petitioners were asked to file representation with the government.

One of the pleas demanded that the court protected the right to life and property of the normal citizens who were affected by the farmer’s protest. The Petition argued that the state is unable to protect these rights and the elements are still roaming free.

Another PIL was filed by Advocate Manohar Lal Sharma who asked the court to take action on the media persons and politicians who claimed the farmers who caused violence were terrorists. The Court later rejected the PIL.

Separately a group of 140 lawyers wrote to the CJI about the internet Shutdown in Delhi during the protests. The Government blocked off the protest sites since Republic Day.

The tractor parade on January 26th Republic Day was supposed to be to highlight the needs of farmer unions to repeal the three new farm laws but this turned into complete violence on the streets of the National Capital where the protestors broke through barriers, overturned vehicles, fought with the police and hoisted a religious flag from the ramparts of the Red Fort.
