While the Supreme Court heard a plea seeking an injunction against the tractor rally that is scheduled for January 26th, it held that it is the decision of the Delhi Police officers to see whether the protesting farmers should get entry into Delhi on Republic Day.
The court stated that it is a law and order matter and held that the police officers have to decide who should be allowed into Delhi and the court is not going to interfere in this matter. It said that the matter will be taken up again on Jan 20th.
The observations were made after the Supreme Court heard the Delhi Police’s plea on behalf of the Center for an injunction against the proposed rally march or any type of protest by the farmers that may hamper the celebrations of Republic day on 26th Jan.
On the other hand, the farmers are adamant about holding the rally on Republic Day. They have mentioned that they will not be carrying any weapons or any inflammatory substances to the rally nor will they indulge in any speech that may cause violence. They clarified that they will hold just the parade and there will be absolutely no violence or breaking down of Government buildings. A Farmer leader said that the parade will see the tractors starting their journey from the Delhi borders at their position and return to the same place.
Yogendra Yadav from Sanyukt Kisan Morcha said that it will be a completely peaceful protest as their biggest weapon is non-violence and hopes that there will be no interference from the Delhi police. He added that the farmers will celebrate Republic day with huge fervour. The tractor parade will move in a circle around the outer ring road and will cover places such as Janakpuri, Munirka, Nehru place.
Last week the Bench headed by S.A Bobde had stayed the implementation of the farm laws and had constituted a committee to resolve the disputes of the farmers. Since the discussions of the farmers and the government were not fruitful the court believed that constituting a committee would help in creating a healthy atmosphere and help in creating trust and confidence in the farmers.
Till now, the government has held 9 rounds of talks with 41 farmer unions but failed to come to any conclusions and the farmers have stuck to their main demand of a complete repeal of the three acts
