On 29th July 2020, the Supreme Court received a Petition. The plea sought the transfer of an FIR from Patna to Mumbai. Additionally, it demanded a stay on the investigation by the Bihar Police on the matter.
Brief Facts of the Case
On 14th June 2020, actor Sushant Singh Rajput committed suicide. He hanged himself in his apartment in Bandra, Mumbai. The Mumbai Police has conducted the investigation from the very beginning. The police authorities have interrogated various persons from the Bollywood industry, such as people like Mahesh Bhatt, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Aditya Chopra, and others.
The statement of Rhea Chakraborty, an actress, was also recorded. She was the alleged girlfriend of the deceased. Her interrogation went on for a whole day. During the investigation, it was alleged that the top production houses boycotted the deceased. Consequently, this caused depression to him which pushed him to commit suicide.
The demise of the deceased came as a big shock to everyone. Reportedly, after receiving this news, many fans of the actor also committed suicide. This also led to a huge debate on social media on nepotism. This incident gave courage to many actors to come forward and to share their stories of injustice. Several actors are the victims of the dirty politics of the industry. Moreover, many politicians and actors demanded a CBI probe in this matter.
FIR against Rhea Chakraborty
The deceased’s father filed an FIR in Patna on 25th July against Rhea Chakraborty and six others. The FIR attracted different sections of IPC. It includes sections:
- 306 – Abetment of suicide;
- 341 – Punishment for wrongful confinement;
- 380 – Theft in a dwelling house;
- 406 – Punishment for criminal breach of trust;
- 420 – Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property.
The deceased’s father stated in the FIR that Rhea Chakraborty left the house on 8th June 2020, with cash, jewellery, credit cards, laptop, important documents, and medical reports.
Petition by Rhea Chakraborty
Rhea Chakraborty filed the present Petition through Advocate Manish Maneshinde. The Petition sought transfer of the FIR from Patna to Mumbai. Further, it demanded a stay on the investigation by the police of Bihar until the disposal of Plea. The filing of the Petition was 4 days after filing of the FIR. The Bihar Police team of 4 members already reached Mumbai to carry out the investigation. This makes the Petition important as the team may interrogate Rhea Chakraborty.
