Madras High Court on Tuesday observed orally that there should be some responsibility shown by the Media and should not telecast everything on the channel since they do not have any Censorship.
A division bench comprised of Justice N Kirubakaran and Justice B Pugalendhi after expressing displeasure at the content being telecast by the news channel said that there should be some control over the television channels.
As per the court, media should have some responsibility for what content they are showing on the screen as a small child also watches that. The media telecasted the 2008 Mumbai Terror Attacks where the terrorists were also watching the channels for clues to attack. The court also has given an example wherein a girl was butchered in Karnataka and that incident was also shown on the TV screen. As per the court, these telecasts will have an adverse effect on the minds of the children who are in their learning phase.
The High Court was hearing two Public Interest Litigations, one seeks direction to the central and the state government to monitor and take action against the TV Channels and cable operators for telecasting vulgar and obscene programs and advertisements, and the other PIL seeking action against online gaming groups involved in the cybercrimes, scam, and illegal data transfer.
With regard to the obscene and vulgar programs and advertisements, the court said that these media are entering the houses without permission. In reference to the online gaming, the court earlier has sent notices to cricketers Virat Kohli and Saurav Ganguly, and actors Prakash Raj, Tamannaah Bhatia, Rana Daggubati, and Sudeep for featuring advertisement in online gaming. The counsel for them has submitted that the Tamil Nadu Government has promulgated an ordinance for banning Online Gaming in the state.
The court restrained the channels for telecasting such programs and advertisement, by granting an interim injunction.
