SC announced New Roster: CJI and Seven Senior Judges to hear PILs from 4 Jan

The Supreme Court on Monday has announced a new roster, which will govern the allocation of cases to different benches of the apex court and will come into effect from 4 January.

As per the roster, a total of 41 matters have been allotted to different benches.

According to the new roster, public interest litigation (PIL) petitions, letter petitions, and social justice matters would now be heard by Chief Justice of India (CJI) S A Bobde and seven other senior judges. Besides the CJI, the senior-most judge included Justice N V Ramana, and justices R F Nariman, U U Lalit, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan, and L Nageswara Rao would also deal with the PILs and social justice matters which usually involve the Centre and the states.

Some subject matters will be covered solely under CJI SA Bobde, as per the new roster which includes election matters, Habeas Corpus matters, Matter pertaining to appointments, etc of Constitutional Functionaries, Matter pertaining to Statutory Appointments & Appointment of other Law officers, Matter pertaining to Mines, Minerals & Mining Leases, Matters pertaining to Commissions of Enquiry, Matters pertaining to Admission to educational institutions other than Medical & Engineering, Arbitration matters, etc.

As per the new roster, criminal matters will be heard by the bench containing 14 Judges including the Hon’ble CJI. The other 13 Judges are Mr. Justice N.V. Ramana Mr. Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman Mr. Justice Uday Umesh Lalit Mr. Justice A.M. Khanwilkar Dr. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud Mr. Justice Ashok Bhushan Mr. Justice L. Nageswara Rao Mr. Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul Mr. Justice Mohan M. Shantanagoudar Mr. Justice S. Abdul Nazeer Mr. Justice Navin Sinha Ms. Justice Indu Malhotra Ms. Justice Indira Banerjee.
