5 High Court Judges to be appointed as Chief Justice, 9 Justices/ Chief Justices getting transferred

The Supreme Court in a meeting held on 14 December 2020 has recommended the elevation of Justice S. Muralidhar of Punjab and Haryana High Court and Justice Hima Kohli of Delhi High Court to be appointed as the Chief Justice of Orissa High Court and the Chief Justice of Telangana High Court respectively.

Along with them, the SC Collegium also recommended the elevation of three Judges as Chief Justice. Justice Sanjib Banerjee of Calcutta High Court is appointed as the Chief Justice of Madras High Court. Justice Pankaj Mithal presently in Allahabad High Court to be appointed as the Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court and Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia of Uttarakhand High Court to be appointed as Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court.

Transfer of Judges/ Chief Justices

The SC Collegium also recommended the transfer of other Nine Judges/ Chief Justices to various High Courts. This includes the transfer of: –

Chief Justice of Telangana High Court RS Chauhan to Uttarakhand High Court. He was appointed as the Chief Justice of Telangana High Court on 23 June 2019 and served Rajasthan HC and Karnataka HC as Judge.

Justice JK Maheshwari, currently Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court to Sikkim High Court. Justice Mohammad Rafiq, presently the Chief Justice of Odisha HC to M.P High Court. Justice AK Goswami, chief Justice of Sikkim High Court to Andhra Pradesh HC.

Along with them, Justice Sanjay Yadav of Madhya Pradesh HC transferred to Allahabad HC. Justice Rajesh Bindal of Jammu &Kashmir HC transferred to Calcutta High Court. Justice Vineet Kothari transferred from Madras High Court to Gujarat High Court. Apart from them, Justice Joymalya Bagchi of Calcutta High Court transferred to Andhra Pradesh High Court and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma of Madhya Pradesh High Court transferred to Karnataka High Court.

The Supreme Court collegium was headed by Chief Justice of India SA Bobde along with four other senior-most Justices of the Supreme Court namely Justice N.V. Ramana, Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, and Justice Ajay Manikrao Khanwilkar.
