In a questionable move, three advocates contributed Re 1 each to the fund which was set up this month by the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to extend the financial support to advocates who are not able to sustain themselves because of the standstill due to the Coronavirus lockdown.

While the advocates were not named, the transaction record has been maintained regularly by the Bar Council in a list which is frequently updated to show the donations made to the fund. Apart from these Re 1 contributions, the list additionally points out towards two unnamed advocates who chose to provide Rs 10 every as an aid. Whether those contributions were intended to be symbolic or superficial can be up for debate. As of April 21, a cumulative amount of Rs 66,53,197 has been pooled due to contributions through 311 advocates, including the above-unnamed advocates. The highest donations have been made by Senior Advocates PS Raman and Mohan Parasaran, each of whom contributed Rs 5 lakhs each.

Senior Advocates ARL Sundaresan and Arvindh Pandian have extended Rs 3 lakhs each, Senior Advocates S Prabakaran, N Venkatraman, Satish Parasaran and G Masilamani has contributed Rs 2 lakhs each, whereas Senior Advocates P Wilson and NL Rajah had donated Rs 1.5 lakhs each. A wide variety of lawyers have also stepped in to contribute up to Rs 1 lakh.

Justice SM Subramaniam, who had earlier contributed his one month’s salary to financially aid workers of the unorganised quarter, has contributed Rs 2.5 lakhs.
