The Supreme Court stayed the implementation of all the three farm laws on Tuesday after passing orders on a batch of petitions that challenged the constitutional validity of these laws. While the government is in favour of these laws the farmers have been demanding to repeal the same.

The Court expressed its interest to solve the problems between the Centre and the farmers by setting up a committee that will examine these laws.

Supreme Court appoints a committee

The committee was formed by Chief Justice S A Bobde and comprised of Justices Pramod Kumar Joshi, Ashok Gulati, HS Mann, and Anil Dhanwant to examine the farm laws.

The Chief Justice of India said that

“We cannot keep the farm laws abeyance for nothing. There must be some progress to resolve the issue over farm laws which we want to do through the committee”.

The Justice also added that he was open to any suggestions for or against the farm laws and will accept them.

Supreme Court asks the farmers to cooperate

The Supreme Court sought the farmer’s cooperation and asked them to put forth their concerns to the committee that is to be formed to resolve the dispute.

The Supreme Court held that they are forming a committee for the sake of having a clearer picture and hence, they will not hear any complaints from the farmers that they don’t want to approach the committee.

It further added that the Court is aiming towards solving the problems but if the farmers want to agitate indefinitely beyond this, they are free to do so. It assured the farmers that the committee is formed to attend to their problems and solve them so they will not order or punish but just write a report regarding it.

The Supreme Court highlighted the fact that the Judiciary is not politics and thus the farmers will have to cooperate.

Attorney General to submit an affidavit on alleged Khalistani infiltration

Chief Justice of India S.A. Bobde asked Attorney General KK Venugopal about the infiltration of a banned organization in the farmer’s protest.

To this, the Attorney general held that there is Khalistani infiltration in the farmer’s protest to which the SC asked Mr Venugopal to file an affidavit confirming the same.

In response to this, the Attorney General assured the Court that they will file an affidavit and place IB records.
