22,000 Lawyers Apply for Financial Help to WB Bar Council

Many lawyers are facing economic distress due to the pandemic. These advocates submitted applications for financial relief to the Bar Council of West Bengal so that they could receive financial support.

Facts of the case

The case is being heard through video conferencing. It involves applications of about 22,000 lawyers. They pled for financial help to the State Bar Council as they are suffering a financial crunch due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Arguments by the Petitioner

The petitioners submitted that huge amounts on account of outstanding lawyers’ fees. These fees were due on account of learned advocated rendering professional services. These advocates represented the Government in various cases. The State and Central government are yet to pay these advocates their dues. The counsel for the petitioners submitted that if the Government does not clear such dues of the learned lawyers, they will face a lot of hardship.

Arguments by the Respondent

In this case, the respondent is the state of West Bengal. Learned Advocate General represented the State Government. Meanwhile, Mr Vipul Kundalia and Mr Rajashree Kundalia represented the Union of India. The advocates representing the Union of India decided to discuss these payment issues. They have assured to discuss the payment of these advocates at the appropriate level.

The Judgment of the Case

The Court is yet to issue its judgment and the matter has not been disposed of yet. Owing to the cyclone and the COVID-19 pandemic, the Court was not functioning at its full potential.
