An excellent opportunity for a legal counsel who wants to work on range of legal advice including on complex commercial contracts relating to LNG supply, regasification services, gas marketing arrangements, terminal expansion and port development/operations, residual upstream business issues, and contracting and procurement. Apart from contributing as a commercial and operations lawyer you will also be required to manage the provision of good governance, ethics and compliance standards and company secretarial support to the Integrated Gas business entities in India.

What’s the role?

As part of the legal team you will provide professional, cost-effective, practical and commercially savvy legal advice and where required, litigation support. You will proactively identify legal risks in a variety of circumstances and offer alternative strategies and mitigation steps balancing business desired outcomes and protecting the business against legal risks. You are required to independently lead engagements with business leaders in managing their expectations on legal support from time to time. A fantastic opportunity for collaborating and coordinating with Legal colleagues across Regional/Global teams in delivering the desired outcomes in risk mitigation.

Work with third parties in dealing with corporate legal work and litigation, including negotiations / engagements; keeping Shell’s rights and reputation at the forefront in all financial, contractual and other arrangements.

What we need from you?

We’re extremely keen to speak to candidates who have a sound understanding of the application of commercial and corporate laws in operational business transactions (particularly in the energy, oil and natural gas, or infrastructure sectors). An ability to proactively deliver effective legal advise and support in a timely manner; draft documentation covering a broad range of topics; applying imaginative commercially acceptable solutions to technical problems; remain updated on legal developments; research and get into new areas of law; a sound track-record in developing, maintaining and managing relationships with external counsel, law firms and business clients at many levels including influencing business / functional leaders; expertise in managing new business expansion would be some of the key attributes in potential candidates that we would be interested in.  An understanding of organizations and governance structures such as business principles, anti-bribery and corruption, competition laws, conflicts of interest, as well as legal aspects of safety issues would be desirable. Knowledge and experience of negotiating and drafting agreements and other documents related to procurement of goods and services including specialized EPC contracts related to LNG terminal and port operations would be an advantage as would an additional qualification as a company secretary in India.

Along with your strong experience in the delivery of solutions within a private practice or corporate environment, we’d also hope to see as many of the following on your CV:

  • Indian law qualified legal professional with 5-8 years post-qualification experience.
  • Demonstrated history of identifying legal risks, excellent analytical skills and an ability to identify and appreciate the significance of legal issues, recognize legal and reputational risk and develop cost effective legal and business resolutions;
  • Sound working knowledge and experience of commercial and corporate laws (specifically contractual and regulatory matters) in the energy and infrastructure industry, preferably the oil and gas sector.
  • Sound judgment in sensitive areas and on difficult issues; strong drafting, influencing and negotiating skills; Lead complex / sensitive legal engagements in the space of litigation and with regulatory authorities and business partners; understanding and taking into account business drivers in decision-making;

Of course, you’ll need to convince us that you have an excellent understanding of legal risks and challenges and that have the ability to identify the risks and liabilities. As well as being able to quickly grasp technical detail, working directly with experts in their field, it’s vital that you have the all-round communication skills to translate that information into language that’s readily understood by non-technical clients and colleagues.
