In a critical move, Gujarat government on Wednesday decided to make helmet use optional within the city limits in the state of Gujarat. The decision was taken in the gathering of the state cabinet and was made public by Transport Minister R C Faldu.

Government’s Announcement

Announcing the government’s decision, Faldu stated, “We were getting a lot of complaints that people were facing practical difficulties in wearing helmets within the urban limits of municipalities and municipal corporations”

The subject came up for consideration before the government. And today, the Cabinet has decided to make use of helmet voluntary within the limits of municipalities and municipal corporations. However, helmets will be compulsory on state highways, national highways and panchayat roads outside the limits of municipalities and municipal corporations” he added.

Supreme Court’s take on wearing Helmet

A directive was issued by the Supreme Court in 2015, which clearly stated that all two-wheeler drivers should wear helmets. The decision of the Gujarat government can be seen as a direct violation of the Supreme Court’s Directive and it is yet to be seen how the said decision is going to be accepted by the public in Gujarat.
